A while back (November 2005) I got a bug in my ear to learn how to pick on a fretless banjo. So I went shopping online to see what is available. I ended up landing on Bob Flesher's web site, where I found a kit advertised for a minstrel banjo in the style of Boucher.
My interest was piqued by the minstrel kit, so I emailed Bob, and the rest is history. I ordered the kit, and shortly after that it arrived in good order.
This web page is an accounting of my efforts to build the Flesher minstrel banjo kit. I have done this before with a Goldtone kit, and I had so much fun doing it that I decided to do the same for this one. I am not a luthier, and I have no real shop or fancy equipment for doing this work. If you want to see how the professionals do this, there are lots of web sites where you can find that information, most notably http://www.frets.com.
I have shot the photos and written the text for this story as I did the work. My goal was to chronicle what I really had to do in order to build this kit. I have not skipped over the hard parts to make it look easier than it really was. It was not planned out in advance. So this web site is a bumpy road and may meander a bit.
